Super Monday Week 35 SY24

SUPER MONDAY

A motivational and informational morning message from Superintendent Willis

Week 35 ~ April 22nd, 2024

Super Monday Message

Every year I attended Piute High School I looked forward to student body elections. I was frequently inspired by older student leaders. The following story of the paradoxical commandments is the best advice I could give to our student leaders.

In 1968 a 19 year old Kent Keith wrote what he called the Paradoxical Commandments. He wrote these 10 commandments for a leadership book for student leaders at Harvard. Thirty years later Dr. Keith was in a rotary club meeting when someone else read his writings. A fellow club member of the group read a poem called “Anyway” that he said Mother Teresa had written and hung on the wall of her children’s home. Dr. Keith was surprised to hear what sounded like his paradoxical commandments. He did some research and found that somehow his college writing had made it all the way to India with Mother Teresa, and she had presumably changed some of the words to post it on her wall. Dr. Keith was deeply touched that Mother Teresa had seen and found importance in his work.

The following is the version of Dr. Keith’s writings that reportedly hung on Mother Teresa’s wall...

ANYWAY

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered,

LOVE THEM ANYWAY

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives,

DO GOOD ANYWAY

If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies,

SUCCEED ANYWAY

The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow,

DO GOOD ANYWAY

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable,

BE HONEST AND FRANK ANYWAY

What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight,

BUILD ANYWAY

People really need help but may attack you if you help them,

HELP PEOPLE ANYWAY

Give the world the best you have, and you'll get kicked in the teeth,

GIVE THE WORLD THE BEST YOU'VE GOT ANYWAY.

When you’re not sure what to do, these paradoxical commandments are a good place to start. Have the best week 35.

Super High Fives

Just a couple of the awesome recent accomplishments that need a big thank you.

  • A super high five to the Piute High School Choir. There was a great crowd, great music, and great fun. Also a super high five to all the art students that had their art on display on Saturday. We have very talented artists and great teachers.
  • A super high five to the Piute High School dance team for placing at the top in multiple categories in their competition over the weekend. A very athletic and strong team with several seniors that will be missed.
