Goal

K through 6th grades will hold yearly field trips, as well as individual class core-based field trips as per the administration's discretion. Examples of already scheduled field trips are: K-3 will visit Bryce Canyon, the 4th Grade will go to the State Capitol and the Living Planet Aquarium in Draper, the 5th grade will go to Thanksgiving Point, and the 6th grade will go to the Clark Planetarium. Also provide guest speakers and assemblies that support core curriculum and character ed.

We will continue to see Math improvement by providing continued support of the Saxon Math program. We will accomplish this by providing the Math consumables, which are essential to applying the Saxon Math Program to its fullest potential. We would also provide the IXL program for the whole school, and buy STMath and iready math software that the state math grant does not cover along with Really Great Reading for K-3. After purchasing Reading Wonders we would like to continue to support the program by purchasing the supplies needed for the program to continue to be effective in our school. We will purchase all consumables for Reading Wonders. We will also help teachers evaluate their test scores to better help their students meet or exceed the goals that we have set. To purchase state approved core Science books, so we will be better able to provide Science core learning and understanding to our students at CES and in doing so increase the test scores. Along with computer devices that will support our software programs. We will also purchase consumables for our Character Education program.

Meet our School Community Council!

School Community Council is part of state law.  They are organizations made up of parents and staff members.  They look at data related to how Circleville is performing and review school improvement plans for improving student results.  The council decides how best to spend Land Trust money, which is money the federal government earns and distributes from federally-protected lands.  

The following members were elected to the 2020-21 School Community Council (SCC).  Terms are for two years.

Feel free to contact a member of the School Community Council if you have an issue that you would like the council to discuss.  Agendas and drafts of the minutes are circulated a week before meetings, posted on our website, and posted on the school’s front doors.  Please share your input with a member of the council!

Circleville Elementary--Faculty Room

Present: Kathy Riddle, Kristi Westwood, Amber Barnson, Stacie Gass, Lisa Allan, and Jim Martin

1. Introductions were made.  
2. Jim Martin discussed the background and purpose of School Community Councils--they come from state law and are a way to give voice to the community in making decisions to benefit the school.  
3. Jim Martin handed out the Land Trust plan for the coming year, even though the header said 2019-20.  This year, we are focused on many of the same things we focused on last year--making sure that teachers have the program supplies they need for math,language arts, and science, supplementing our programs with online programs like IXL, funding a literacy specialist to work with our struggling readers, paying for school field trips so students increase their background and experiential knowledge, funding our character education program, funding math and science aides for struggling students, funding additional technology, and providing teachers additional classroom supply money.  There was a discussion by the SCC on whether the carryover from last year’s plan should be used to hire an additional paraprofessional.  This paraprofessional could be used to support some of the academic needs our students display from being out of school in the spring.  Jim will find out how much this carryover is and bring the information back to the SCC for discussion next time.  
4. We discussed some of our Circleville data.  The data sheet is attached to these minutes and shows how our students have performed on DIBELS and RISE.  It also shows our goals as per the Land Trust plan for the coming year.  
5. We discussed our plans for the year to continue growing academically.  There was some discussion about a Stallion Stomp and if this will happen this year around November.  There was also discussion about how our school might support students if we go back online.  Amber suggested that the approach be more uniform across grades and more time be spent with teachers.  SCC members wondered if the needs of teachers and classes related to the pandemic are being addressed--are there enough wipes, masks, etc.?  Jim will survey the teachers to find out.  
6. SCC decided on a schedule for meetings this school year.  We will meet the second Tuesday of every month starting October 27th at 5:30 pm.  Additional meeting dates include December 1 at 5:30 pm, January 26th at 5:30 pm, February 23rd at 5:30 pm, March 23rd at 5:30 pm, and April 27th at 5:30 pm.  
7. The meeting was adjourned at 6:30 pm.  

RISE RESULTS--PROFICIENCY

*A 5% increase is the goal set in the Land Trust plan.  It constitutes 4 additional students at proficiency.  

Some questions to consider:

Dear Families,

One of the responsibilities of the School Community Council (SCC) is to decide how to spend our Land Trust dollars.  Land Trust dollars are given to school based on earnings from federal protected lands.  They come to us from the United States government.  State law gives the SCC the power to decide how best to use these funds.  

Last year, Circleville received $68,000 in Land Trust monies.  This money was used in the following ways:

• IXL Learning is available to our students in social studies, science, math, and language arts, to provide practice in these core areas.
• We purchase Studies Weekly for some of our grades.  This is a weekly newspaper that helps students learn history tied to the core curriculum.
• We supplemented our math and language arts programs with additional consumable materials.  Consumables are those things that are used by students every year that need to be re-purchased for a new set of students.  
• We took our students on a field trip in October to the pumpkin patch.  
• We purchased an online program for our lower grades called Really Great Reading to ensure that students are reading on grade level by the 3rd grade.  
• We paid for a literacy specialist to help students struggling with reading.  This person hosted students in the library weekly and facilitated a Battle of the Books competition.  
• A person on staff was compensated to be our local science specialist.  
• Teachers were provided with additional teacher supply money to ensure their students had the materials necessary for quality learning.  
• We brought in an author, Gary Hogg, to motivate our students to read and write.
• We funded our character education program.  

Due to school closures in the spring, we were not able to do all the things that we had anticipated when creating the 2019-20 plan.  We also were not able to collect accurate performance data to see if our Land Trust academic goals were met.
