SUPER MONDAY

A motivational and informational morning message from Superintendent Willis

Week 34 ~ April 15th, 2024

Super Monday Message

One of the most sold business books over the last 20 years is a fictional fable about a group of penguins on an iceberg. The author, John Kotter, uses this group of penguins to teach the most important concepts of organizational change. In addition to being on many bestseller lists, the book has been used by some of the largest businesses in the world to implement any number of changes.
So, what happens to these penguins? You can guess by the title of the book, “Our Iceberg Is Melting.” The Iceberg the penguins live on is melting and they don’t realize it. A penguin named Fred makes the discovery, but at first no one believes him. Fred takes a wise penguin named Alice under the iceberg and shows her the structural problems with it. They discuss the likely danger of the iceberg unexpectedly breaking in half or in more pieces.

Fred and Alice take the problem to the leadership of the penguin colony. They have a difficult time convincing them that the problem is serious. Eventually a team is organized to investigate the problem and make recommendations. The team runs into many difficulties in communicating with the colony; first convincing them there is a problem and then in convincing them not to panic about the problem.

The penguin team comes up with several possible solutions, but decides to propose to the colony that they move to another iceberg. They face many struggles in communicating and implementing the plan. When they finally get the colony moved to another iceberg they realize they need to be prepared in case they have the same problem again later. They devise ways to prepare for the future.

The major lesson of the story is the process for change. We must recognize the need for change, build a team for solutions, communicate a future vision, remove obstacles and empower supporting members, and then keep improving. We have great teachers in our school district that are constantly improving in their craft. Have a great week 34.

Super High Fives

Just a couple of the awesome recent accomplishments that need a big thank you.

  • A super high five to our school district bus drivers. If it’s true that 70% of life is just showing up, our bus drivers really make the biggest difference. We have a great group of drivers that are well trained and great to work with.
  • A super high five to an old Piute High School coach and teacher, Greg Allen. He was a great teacher and coach. He is being welcomed into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony on April 29th. If you are interested in attending here is a link to more information.
