Piute County School District,

Since January this year whenever I get a chance to make breakfast for my kids I turn on the song “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John, but the Disney version from the movie “Sing”. The kids and I sing it and dance to it while we make and eat breakfast. It’s turned into our family theme song for 2021 and our response to COVID-19. As you listen and sing along to the song imagine you’re singing it to all the COVID restrictions and any other difficulties you’ve faced this year.

As you sing “you hide behind that mask you use” you can imagine throwing your mask off for the last time. Your heart rate will jump as you hear “Well look at me, I’m coming back again.” You’ll feel some satisfaction singing louder “while I’m still standing you just fade away.” When it hits the chorus and you hear “I’m still standing after all this time, picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind,” you can look back with pleasure that you made it through over a year of wild restrictions and you don’t even have to think about it anymore. You have to sing loud and dance to really have fun with the line “looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid.”

One of my favorite lines is “I’m still standing better than I ever did.” It’s been difficult, but I think it’s made us better. We teach our students everyday that they can do hard things and that by doing hard things they can become better. We have to remember that lesson as well sometimes. If we tackle hard things well, we always come out better.

Make sure to watch, enjoy, sing along, and dance to the video…..
