SUPER MONDAY
A motivational and informational morning message from Superintendent Willis
Week 3 ~ August 25th, 2025
Super Monday Message
The NFL wrapped up their preseason games this last weekend and they will start the regular season next week. There are two players on the Los Angeles Rams active roster that played college ball in Utah. You might have seen some of the highlights of Puka Nucua from BYU setting some NFL rookie records as a wide receiver, but you might not know as much about Britain Covey. I heard a great story about Britain this summer that I thought you would also find motivational.
First you have to have a little history of Britain. If his last name sounds familiar it’s because the author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen R. Covey, is his grandpa. The author of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens”, Sean Covey, is his uncle. The author of “The Speed of Trust”, Stephen M.R. Covey, is his dad. Britain was taught to use time wisely and work hard. Despite only being 5’8”, Britain was Utah’s best high school quarterback for a couple years. His high school success was repeated as a wide receiver and punt returner at the University of Utah. At the U of U he set the team record for punt return yards and had three seasons as the leading receiver.
In 2022, he was not drafted but the Philadelphia Eagles picked him up as an undrafted free agent. Shortly thereafter he was waived from the team and sent to the practice squad. He was then signed again to the active roster in October that year. He played in every game and returned 33 punts for an average of 9.3 yards. Despite some great moments and playing in the 2023 Superbowl, the next season he was right back to fighting for a place on the roster. In August of 2023 he was again cut and sent to the practice squad.
On September 14th, 2023 the Eagles exercised their ability to place a couple practice players on the active roster for just that day’s game, Britain was one of them. Knowing that he did not have a contract and that any opportunity to get on the field could make or break his season, he was a little nervous. Toward the end of the first quarter he was called on to go out with the punt return team and take the punt returner position. It was a long kick and could have been a good opportunity for a big return, but Britain muffed the punt. Meaning, he fumbled the ball. For a player teetering on the edge of the practice squad it could have been a career ending mistake.
Britain’s anxiety was high, but after the game one of the special teams coaches told Britain, “that wasn’t like you”. A few days after the disastrous fumble, the Eagles signed a contract with Britain and trusted him to be the primary punt returner. He was honored by their trust in him. At the next game on September 25th, Britain stepped on the field as the primary active roster punt returner. In the first quarter Britain returned the first punt 54 yards. He went off to total over 110 yards in the game. For the season he led the league in total return yards and was second in the league for yards per return. The Eagles demonstrated the power of trust. Britain now has a Super Bowl ring to prove that sometimes you just need someone that knows you can do it and that will trust you to do it.
We know our students are capable of great things, but sometimes they are anxious or don’t believe in themselves. Sometimes they just need encouragement and trust to see their potential. Have the best week 3.
Super High Fives
Just a couple of the awesome recent accomplishments that need a big thank you.
- A super high five to Morgan Hoyt. Morgan welcomed a new baby girl last week and the week before he presented at the school board meeting. Morgan has a great FFA and Summer Agriculture program running.
- A super high five to our Special Education faculty and staff. They have made great efforts to communicate needs to faculty and staff early in the school year to maximize the benefit for students.
- Super high five to Oscarson Elementary School for another fun Back To School Night. The principal, teachers, and staff are always well prepared with a fun theme and a program.
