Job Description:

This employee is responsible for organizing and implementing a therapy program to

meet the needs of speech, language and deaf and hard of hearing students under the

guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  1. Planning
    1. Designing therapy services under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist so that they are consistent with the total educational philosophy of the district.
    2. Following a professional implementation plan that is developed jointly with the supervising speech/language pathologist and monitored by the program supervisor.
    3. Working in coordination with Special Education teachers in planning and developing services.
    4. Cooperating with school personnel in coordinating Special Education services within that school.
  2. Programing
    1. Conducting grade-wide speech/language and hearing screenings once a year.
    2. Participating in the in-school staffing processes as appropriate.
    3. Providing speech/language and/or hearing screening tests for all students referred by the in-school staffing committee.
    4. Providing diagnostic/evaluation testing for students failing speech/language screenings under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
    5. Participating on evaluation teams for speech, language, deaf and hard of hearing and other students as appropriate under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech language pathologist.
    6. Preparing educational plans annually for each student based on individually assessed needs in accordance with district procedures and under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
    7. Preparing and implementing therapy plans for each student under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
    8. Providing appropriate schedules for exceptional students involving school personnel as required.
    9. Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of exceptional students.
    10. Conferring with the classroom teacher concerning any educational needs of the student.
    11. Making available to teachers instructional ideas that are appropriate for exceptional students within the classroom situation.
    12. Referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist. 
  3. Public Relations
    1. Sharing information with classroom teachers regarding the goals and objectives of the Special Education program and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
    2. Providing information to community groups and parents concerning Special Education programs as requested or needed under the guidance and supervision of a certified or licensed speech/language pathologist.
    3. Working to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  4. Reporting
    1. Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records and related service documents in his/her permanent folder.
    2. Furnishing the principal with current exceptional student schedules.
    3. Documenting and maintaining records on student progress.
    4. Maintaining therapy attendance records.
    5. Attending and participating in faculty meetings or other meetings as required.
  5. Other Responsibilities
    1. Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, observational feedback and conferences, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the district staff.

 

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in speech/language pathology or communication disorders.

 

Desired Qualifications

  1. Experience in a similar position.
  2. Ability to use sign language.
  3. Experience with augmentative communication.
