1140 - Special Education Director

Under the supervision of the principal the sped coordinator will carry out the educational programs for students with disabilities in local buildings.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE RELATIONSHIPS

The coordinator of Special Education is responsible for the day-to-day operations of special education programs at an assigned level (elementary or secondary).

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties;

• Provides instructional leadership with school principal to assigned school in the development of quality special education programs and services.

• Provides guidance and support to assigned school in the areas of compliance with special education state and federal laws and district procedures.

• Provides consistent communication on special education issues to all stakeholders.

• Assists in the allocation of resources and monitors the use of state, federal and local funds for special education.

• Works with the principal on developing a school sped plan based on student needs on an annual basis.

• Ensures effective departmental communication between special education and include all stakeholders.

• Works with the principal in the resolution of sped complaints.

• Develops and summits an annual sped improvement plan.

• Work with principals to provide sped training to paraprofessionals.

• Coordinates with principals and sped paraprofessionals on the I.E.P process in the school.

• Coordinates regularly with the principal on sped program function and process. This includes inclusion for students and training for paraprofessionals.

• Other duties as assigned by the principal.

• Will submit sped reports on appropriate timelines.

• Ensure that parents are able to meaningfully participate in the special

          education processes.

 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of:

• Administration, principles and methods of educational and instructional services models.

• Current educational programs, curriculum, and instructional practices and strategies, which assist students with disabilities in securing a quality education.

• Response to intervention (RTI) model and research based methodologies.

• Teaching and learning theory.

• Day-to-day operations and appropriated support services necessary to sure operational effectiveness of special education program in assigned school.

• Principles and practices of management including supervision, training, and performance evaluation.

• Applicable federal and state laws, codes, regulations, policies, and procedures related to students with disabilities.

• Oral and written communications skills.

• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.

• Ability to: effectively plan, organize, and implement an educational program and support services.

• Assess site program effectiveness.

• Exercise judgment and discretion.

• Prioritize work to meet schedules and timelines.

• Prepare narrative reports.

• Work collaboratively with all stakeholders on sped needs in the district.

• Work independently with little direction.

• Utilize proper discretion in dealing with confidential matters.

 

Understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
